To make a classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich, you will spread peanut butter on one slice of bread and jelly on another, then press the slices together.
Ingredients and tools
2 slices of bread (white, whole wheat, or your favorite)
Peanut butter (creamy or crunchy)
Jelly, jam, or fruit preserves (grape, strawberry, or other flavors)
A butter knife or spreader
A plate for assembly
Step-by-step instructions
Lay out your bread. Place two slices of bread side-by-side on a plate or clean surface.
Spread the peanut butter. Dip your knife into the peanut butter jar and scoop out your desired amount. Spread it evenly over one slice of bread, extending close to the edges.
Spread the jelly. Using a clean knife (or wiping the first one), scoop some jelly out of its jar. Spread the jelly evenly over the second slice of bread.
Combine the slices. Pick up the two slices and press them together firmly, with the peanut butter and jelly sides facing each other.
Cut the sandwich (optional). If you prefer, use your knife to cut the sandwich in half. You can cut straight across to make two rectangles or diagonally to make two triangles.

Tips and variations
Prevent a soggy sandwich: To prevent the jelly from soaking into the bread, spread a thin layer of peanut butter on both slices of bread first, with the jelly in the middle.
Alternative spreads: For dietary reasons or flavor, you can substitute the peanut butter with other nut butters, such as almond butter, or with a soy-based spread.
Grilled PB&J: For a warm and crispy twist, try making a grilled PB&J. Butter the outside of the sandwich and cook it in a skillet over medium heat until golden brown on both sides.
